π©Ί On-Call Clinical Problem Solving β A Quick Guide for Medical Students and Doctors¶
β Standard Steps (when you have time):¶
- Talk to the patient β Take a full history (~30β40 mins).
- Examine the patient β Full physical check.
- Review tests β Labs, imaging, etc.
- Make a diagnosis β Include possible alternatives.
- Plan treatment β Start care and plan follow-up.
β οΈ In Emergencies (e.g., unconscious patient):¶
- Do everything at the same time: history, exam, tests, treatment.
- Focus immediately on:
- Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABCs)
- Vital signs
- Anything life-threatening
π€ Common Medical Student Challenge:¶
- You get called for problems like chest pain or fever.
- You feel unsure without a full workup.
- You donβt have an hour per patientβmust prioritize fast.
π Recommended Quick Response System:¶
- Phone Call β Judge urgency, give basic orders, tell the nurse what to do until you arrive.
- While Walking β Think: βWhat are the likely and dangerous causes?β
- At the Bedside β Rule out life-threatening issues first.
- Then β Do a quick history, exam, and start management.
